A Better Way to Tie Your Horse Up
I happened to run across this little piece of information purely by accident.
We use our horse trailer for a stand in to a barn a lot. We can safely tie 4 horses up to it, and have plenty of room to brush and saddle all of them.
And sometimes, when we get in a hurry, we just sorta sling the halter ropes around the staves of the trailer any which way that will stop a horse for a moment.
And in the process of getting lazy, and just doing it any ole way, we started just daisy chaining the halter rope. You don't have to feed the entire rope thru every time, just a tiny loop, and it comes loose by simply pulling on the tail.
I never actually thought it would stop a horse is he were very determined to pull away.
But most of our horses are pretty well trained, so for a couple of years, we used the daisy chain and never had a horse test it.

But one day a horse did test it. The little mare got spooked a little, pulled back some, danced around, pulled back again. And in the shuffles she ended up behind the trailer. And somehow she had positioned herself in such a way that she was stuck. She couldn't come forward without getting into even more trouble.

Now she was standing there, still sorta pulling back, bug eyed and wondering what to do. And the daisy chain was holding. It was soon apparent that it would hold any kind of pressure.

So, how was I gonna get her loose now?
She still had a good 300-400lbs of pressure on that halter rope, and she couldn't come forward. In my experience, you gotta have slack to undo just about any knot. And there was no slack to be had.

So, because I didn't know what else to do, I tried pulling on the tail of the halter rope.

And to my intense surprise, it came loose. Yes, I had to tug on it a bit. But it did come loose, even tho the little mare was still leaning on it pretty heavily.
Hey... I'll take it.
Make a small loop and bring it around whatever you want to tie to.
Loop another small loop thru that.
And another, how ever many you need to take up the tail of your halter rope.
And to keep your horse inadvertently getting this loose, put the very end of the halter rope thru the last loop.
That's your basic daisy chain, like we all learned in Grade School.
And it will always come loose, even with pressure still on it.
